On gay rights, the GOP evolves

TPM reports that the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Republican Party has had something of a shift on gay marriage:

Last week, the Washington D.C. Republican Committee - the equivalent of the state party - became the first state GOP group to officially endorse gay marriage with a plank in its 2012 platform.

The shift in sentiment surely has to happen sometime. Why not now?
